Vitoria-Gasteiz receives the ParkPAD certificate
Vitoria-Gasteiz, the capital of the Basque Country, received as first Spanish city the ParkPAD certificate. The former European Green Capital (2012) completed the parking policy audit successfully and has now a starting point for its ParkPAD Action Plan. The ParkPAD tool reviews current parking policies and achieves consensus among local stakeholders on improvements. This leads to an action plan that fits the city's Sustainable Urban Mobility Plan (SUMP), comprising feasible and acceptable parking measures.
Vitoria-Gasteiz is one of the leading cities in the Park4SUMP project. The city reversed its modal split as car use reduced (down to 25%) and travel by public transport, by bicycle and on foot increased due to the SUMP implementation. Furthermore public space had been recovered for coexistence and for travelling on foot and by bicycle. Vitoria-Gasteiz now uses these foundations for future urban development. Within this vision, effective and innovative parking management plays a key role in designing the urban mobility system for the future.
